Honoring a Legacy: The Story of the Omar N. Bradley Regional Airport

In Moberly, Missouri, history isn’t just something we remember, it’s something we live alongside every day. Our small town is proud to have played a role in shaping the character of one of America’s most respected military leaders, General Omar Nelson Bradley. The values he came to embody humility, kindness, quiet strength, and devotion to duty are the very qualities woven into the fabric of our community.

Moberly’s commitment to honoring our “Favorite Son” began more than 80 years ago, long before the world fully recognized Bradley as a five star general and a national hero. In 1943, at the height of World War II, Moberly took a meaningful step by officially naming its airport the Omar N. Bradley Municipal Airport, a tribute to the young man who was born in nearby Clark and raised here in Randolph County.

A Look Back: How the Airport Began

Moberly’s aviation story started in 1927, when Clinton Linneman and Leo Hutchinson established the city’s first airport. Their early efforts opened the door for local pilots and aviation enthusiasts to dream bigger.

By 1938, interest in aviation had grown enough for a group of Moberly residents to form the Moberly Airport Association, launching what became known as the Moberly Municipal Airport. Just five years later, in 1943, the city council officially renamed the airport in honor of General Bradley, recognizing his leadership and connection to the community even as he actively served overseas.

Bradley’s Homecoming

Although the airport carried his name beginning in 1943, General Bradley didn’t have the chance to attend the dedication. At the time, he was leading American troops in North Africa during World War II.

His long awaited visit came on June 9, 1945, when Moberly hosted a massive homecoming celebration and “Bradley Day” at Tannehill Park. The town gathered in pride and admiration to welcome him home, a moment still remembered as one of Moberly’s most significant community events.

Growth, Investment, and a New Era of Service

Moberly continued to invest in the airport throughout the decades. In 1961, voters approved a $62,999 bond for major improvements. When construction was completed in April 1964, a new dedication ceremony took place with General Bradley himself serving as guest of honor.

These upgrades positioned the airport for expanded service, and Ozark Air Lines soon began offering Randolph County’s first and only commercial passenger and mail flights, a service that continued until 1986.

A Destination for Aviators Today

Now known as the Omar N. Bradley Regional Airport, the facility spans 285 acres, sits at an elevation of 866 feet, and features two concrete runways measuring 5,000 feet and 3,350 feet in length. It remains a vital asset for local aviation, emergency services, business travel, and special events.

Most recently, in June 2024, Moberly proudly welcomed participants of the Air Race Classic, a historic transcontinental women’s air race that brought energy, visitors, and national recognition to the airport once again.
